I would love to be a blogger too, but how do I start a blog? I get asked this question at least twice a week so I decided to share the three basics you need to know when starting your blog. Three things to thoroughly think about before starting, to always keep in mind and to hold on to:

1. Name: The most important but probably the hardest: coming up with a name for your blog. I got the luck my friends regularly made fun of me by calling me the ‘Queen of Jet Lags’, since I travel so often and have jet lags all the time. The best tip I can give you on this one is to make it personal and unique. Calling your blog ‘The Brunette Salad’ or ‘Love Fashion’ will probably not make you stand out. Use a phrase or thing which you can relate to. Next to being original, having a catchy name is also super important. Try to think of something people will remember!

2. Subjects: I started out as a travel blogger with a touch of fashion and these are still my main subjects, although I’ve picked up a few extra categories like beauty along the way! Make sure to find a niche theme you’re going to focus your blog on. Make sure you don’t limit yourself too much though because these days it’s quite hard to become a full time blogger when you only post outfits. The market is just simply saturated with awesome fashion bloggers who all have great content. Try to find that something extra special. But remember people also don’t want to follow a travel blogger who makes a trip only once a year or a food blogger that posts about anything but food. Go for the subjects you are passionate about since that’s the most common reason for success!

3. Audience: Last but not least: start by imaging an audience you would like to reach. Are you sharing easy and cute bake recipes? Girls from 8 – 16 are probably going to be your biggest following so make sure to adapt to them in the writing, web design, social media and so on. My passion is travel and high end fashion, that’s why my main audience contains women aged 21 – 38. Knowing this I know what and how to write, what content to create and what brands to work with!

Hope you all liked reading today’s article. Do you agree with me by calling these three things the basics to start a blog with? Let me know!

I definitely agree, these are great tips for someone who is starting out! I created my blog as a bit of a diary when I moved to London to study law, thus the name; LisaLDN! My audience was mainly my friends and family, haha 🙂 I’ve loved seeing it grow these past years though!

I feel like knowing your audience is very important, but at the same time you need to stay true to yourself. Beauty bloggers are most popular among girls aged 14-25, but as I myself am 36 already, i cant really write catered at them, so I stick to skincare and anti-age more to attract readers my age.

Knowing your audience is a great tip, google analytics definitely helps when knowing your audience’s age, gender and location.

I completely agree with you. Knowing your audience is one of the most, if not the most, important thing to be a blogger. Of course, the market is saturated, and being a blogger I already know it. One thing that you may mention is also motivation and determination, because living full time your passion isn’t something happening overnight. And the choice of your blogger name is so important! It makes it all! x

Those had killed me for two years after I published my first post on blog. I did change my blog name two times and now everything is perfect. I started with outfit ideas and product reviews, then I decided these were not my real subjects, and I tried to find the thing I’m good at. Even though subject and name are very important, I don’t agree that we should pick our audience and write posts respectively. On the other hand, of course this gives you a clue to choose your social media channels, watching out the trends etc.
